Meghalaya Chief Minister Addresses Border Tensions with Assam

Current Status of Meghalaya-Assam Border Dispute

On Tuesday, Meghalaya's Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma stated that the situation along the state's border with Assam is under control. However, he cautioned that sporadic incidents may continue due to long-standing disputes.

Sangma described the border tensions as a 'complex issue with historical roots,' noting that occasional clashes occur. He emphasized that the government has managed to alleviate tensions 'to some extent' with the support of the public.

The conflict between Assam and Meghalaya is linked to the Assam Reorganization (Meghalaya) Act of 1969, which involves 12 disputed areas along an 884.9-kilometer border. Sangma informed reporters that both state governments have taken steps to resolve these disputes through dialogue. In 2022, Assam and Meghalaya signed memorandums of understanding to demarcate six disputed areas, marking a significant step towards peace.

He added that regional committees have been established to address the remaining six disputed areas, aiming to involve local communities and identify mutually acceptable solutions.
